Location & Premises Description

The property, known to Tasmanians as Mount Elephant Pancakes or the Pancake Barn, can be seen in aerial view on Google Earth (GE).   Owing to an error in GE naming, the street address does not correlate exactly with their map, but can be easily seen  as the largest multi-building Site between two locations:

  • Dalmayne Road St Marys Tasmania , and

  • Douglas Apsley National Park, Tasmania

Or you can key in latitude and longitude coordinates, as with any site on GE.   The coordinates are:   South (S) 41° 38’ 1”   East (E) 148° 14’ 9”

Once the Dalmayne Road area is located on GE, you will notice an image of knife-and-fork, the usual GE way of indicating a restaurant.

For those intending to drive there, the street address is 824 Elephant Pass Road.  Follow directions below (Getting There).  All else on this page presumes you have arrived on site.

On arrival the first sight is of course the restaurant, featured on our Home Page.

If this is a busy time and the front parking lot full, additional parking is available down the road at left.  Further parking is made available on busy summer days; the side gate is opened so caravans etc can park on the back lawn.

After parking you can access that back lawn area on foot via the gate and look around without disturbing the proprietors, who may be busy with diners. Note that the restaurant is not run by the owners (Lew and Pam Bretz) and that the proprietors know of, but are not involved with, sale issues.  So they will definitely not wish to be interrogated about such matters by curiosity seekers.

On that understanding, interested parties are free to wander about the property though, of course, not to enter any building unless accompanied by the owners or their agent.

Getting there

Directions vary depending on where one starts:

From St Marys township: 8.24 km south, on the Tasman Highway to Bicheno/Hobart.

The local name for that stretch of highway is alternately Gray Road and Elephant Pass Road.  The street number, for obvious reasons, is 824

From Hobart direction:  Mt Elephant is roughly a 25 minute drive north of Bicheno, along the coast road (Tasman Highway).  About 20 minutes along that highway a clearly marked Left turnoff  leads up Elephant Pass. A long sign there indicates the restaurant at Mt Elephant, a further 8km away.
