Message from Ian....
I am regularly bringing a trailer load of fine,
weed free, grass cuttings from the croquet lawns
at St Leonards. My compost bin is full. Would
anybody like a load? I will deliver to site at
a prearranged time and pick up the empty trailer
again at a prearranged time. We can discuss at

Scott’s,
Directions: Turn off the Lalla road which
starts beside the War Memorial in Lilydale,
signed to Lalla and Karoola. About 700 m up
that road, past the first railway crossing,
an unsealed track takes off to the left with
house numbers 71 to 77 marked, not very
clear as you approach. (If you reach the
entrance to CherryTop you have gone too
far!). Go straight up the track, a few
hundred metres, towards Mt Arthur. Park on
either side of the driveways avoiding the
bulbs just appearing on either side of the
downhill stretch.
Come and enjoy wondering around Ian and
Jenny’s garden. It is also a great time to
share any spare seeds you may have for
spring planting.

June Garden Group
Meeting - Preserving the Harvest
Eva and Les invite our LGG members to
our place on
26th June 2010 for an afternoon to share our
knowledge about preserving. There will be
tasting as well, sweets and savouries.
Probably you should only bring something
what you preserved, either just to show, or
to taste too. (Save time on baking)
No cows on the property at present, so the
gates can stay open. You can park in front
of the garage, or on the newly fixed road
around the houses. Who weren't here before,
we are 1.5 km from the Post Office towards
Launceston, nearly opposite Mountain Road.
There is a very old shed with a rusty roof
at the front, and about 400metre driveway to
the house.
See you at the usual time about 1.30PM.

May - Lilydale Garden Group Meeting
"Tumbledown House"
hosted by Brook & Scott Price
· Planning your garden.
· Lilydale planting guide
· Soil pH testing
Brook and Scott moved to Lilydale last
November from the UK to embrace a more
healthy lifestyle. Tumbledown has a some
established fruit trees and a tiny but
reasonably cheerful vegie patch which they
hope will expand (as their knowledge does )
to one day grow most of own food. They are
also planning to create a garden surrounding
the house for pleasure, with flowers, lawn,
trees, shrubs and bulbs.... “we have a
pretty blank canvas to start with at the
moment and plan to be here for many more
years to help it grow up around us!”
· Please come and share your valuable
knowledge and help Brook and Scott(and all
the rest of us) by participating in an
informal session about planning your garden.
If you could give some thought to the things
you have learned and wished you had known
about before planning your garden in
Lilydale. (Ideas will be recorded on the day
and distributed)
· Lilydale planting guide – lets develop
our own planting guide to share with our
community (recorded on the day and
distributed)
· Soil pH testing – a demonstration of
a simple home test kit
To help warm their new garden spare plants
or strawberry runners would be greatly
appreciated.

March Garden Visit
Ildiko & Sandor Nagy’s Place at
Lilydale, TAS
Directions:
Turn up Doakes Rd at the Hardware store in
Lilydale and travel for 2kms. Just after the
hard turn to the left, turn right into Walkers
Rd (dirt). Travel to the end of the road and
look out for the number 53 and the machinery.
Ildiko and Sandor have a well
established orchard, vegetable garden and
ornamental flower garden. They grow much of what
they eat, make their own wine from their 240
vines and have an electricity generating water
turbine.

Alvaro and Suzanne Ascui, “Strathewen”
Directions:
From Lilydale, drive for about 4 km along the
Lalla Rd, past Providence Vineyard, and turn
right on Brooks Rd, drive down for about 600 m,
to our entrance, which is on the left, opposite
“The Leaning Church Vineyard”. Drive all the way
down, past the carport and house, and angle park
on the grass, facing the dam (if you are lucky,
you might spot a resident platypus).
Strathewen farm (80 acres)
was established over 100 years ago. The
farmhouse dates from 1915, with additions built
in 1983. The veggie garden, orchard and garden
date from 1982. The dam was constructed at that
time and gives ample supply of water for garden
and livestock. 6000 now well established
blue-gums were also planted in 1982 on a badly
eroded hillside (behind the dam) and later
ornamental trees surrounding the dam. Suzanne
and Alvaro farm organically and produce most of
the veggies and fruit they consume, they also
breed Angus cattle.
As a special veggie theme for
this month is Tomatoes. We can compare notes on
tomato varieties that have grown well in our
area. Please bring a sample or two of your
favourite ones, with information about when you
started them, when you plant out and the
earliest date of ripening.

Lilydale Garden
Group – January Garden Visit & Guest Speaker
1.30pm , Saturday 23rd
January
Penny and Ashley, “Windrush”,
Underwood
Parking spaces are
limited for this secluded garden and will be
reserved for those who cannot walk very far.
Please park at the end of Cameron’s Road,
for a short stroll down the hill. Windrush
was established approximately 30 years ago,
the vegetable and flower garden and orchard
have all been built on the slope, and the
home and surrounds were built almost
entirely from recycled materials.
Guest Speaker:
Steve Solomon author of Growing
Vegetables South of Australia will be a
guest speaker on the day and is keen to
answer any questions you may have. Steve
was originally from North America where the
climate is similar, and moved to Tasmania in
1998. He believes in providing much of your
family’s food from your garden and spent
many years as a vegetable seed producer
trialling many varieties. Copies of his book
will be for sale on the day.

Saturday 28th November 2009 |
Brenda Bryce will be happy to have us meet at
Providence Vineyard, Lalla Road, Lilydale on
Saturday 28th November from 1.30. In case you
didn't know, Providence was the first vineyard
to be established in Tasmania.
Brenda and Stuart have devised a very compact
and potentially productive vegie garden which
could be a model for those of us for whom
bending and kneeling is becoming a problem!.
Please advise Brenda on brenda@providence.com.au
if you will be there.
I suspect that, as seems normal, there will be
no get together in December so, to those who
will not be at Providence on 28th, a very happy
Christmas.
Let's hope this good weather is here for the
summer, but with frequent overnight rains! |

Saturday 24th October |
This Saturday 24th with Rex. You cannot miss his BIG'
sign between the junctions of Underwood Road
with Camerons Road and Cherry Farm Road. Normal
time 2.00 pm.
Sadly, owing to a prior commitment, I cannot be
there but Jenny should be.
November meeting. I have an offer from Brenda
Bryce, at Providence Vineyard. If you agree I
will arrange a date. But can we refuse??!!
Any ideas for someone to give us a talk?
With this weather and the speed with which it is
bringing on the shrubs plants it makes gardening
really worth while. Sadly the weeds and the
grass are also benefiting!
Have a good meeting, Ian.

5th |
19th September |
We welcome you
all to Red Rooster Host Farm, for the
September garden visit, on Saturday 19th at
1.30pm. Hopefully we will have a lovely
sunny, spring day, and some of our daffodils
will still be in bloom. Finding us is easy,
5km from the Lebrina PO there is a large
blue sign on the side of Golconda road " Red
Rooster Host Farm", turn right onto Burns
road follow for 5km, farm gate on right.
Look forward to seeing you all again.
Michelle &
Howard.

22nd August 2009 |
Leslie
Saturday the 22nd August at
Leslies house.
At CherryTop just one residence further up
Lalla Road, on the same side, than the entry
into our (Jenny & Ian's) track. Aim to arrive at
1.30.
Look forward to seeing you on Saturday, chez
Leslie (Gallagher), Ian.
The weather is
very wet so it will be advisable to bring
boots on Saturday. Afternoon tea and the
'pep talk' will be in one of our
accommodation cottages where it will be warm
but we have a 'shoes off' policy so think
about bringing a thick pair of socks or
slippers. It's not forecast for rain until
late afternoon so with some luck I should be
able to show you how the gardens are moving
on out of winter, talk about rotations
and developing soil fertility using natural
organic methods, and discuss what Community
Supported Agriculture is.
Looking forward
to seeing you all again,
Lesley

25th July
2009 |
Ian & Jenny
This next gathering is
scheduled for Saturday 25 July, at the the home
of Ian & Jenny at 1.30pm but this
may depend upon when Peter is free. I will
advise if there is a change.
Peter Coxhead is coming to join us and to
explain how we might help with seed conservation
and, perhaps, how it might link in with the
International Millennium Seed Bank project
Coordinated by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
But not to be confused with the 'Doomsday Vault'
on Svalbard which is concerned with food crops.
Otherwise come and see what Jenny has achieved
in the 5+ years we have been here. I will have a
fire roaring in case the weather has not warmed
up from last night!
Update... THIS Saturday, July 25th at
1.30, To
find us, we are off the road which starts beside
the War Memorial in Lilydale, signed to Lalla
and Karoola. About 700 m up that road, past the
first railway crossing, an unsealed track takes
off to the left with house numbers 71 to 77
marked, not very clear as you approach. (If you
reach the entrance to CherryTop you have gone
too far!). Go straight up the track, a few
hundred metres, towards Mt Arthur. As you enter
our property pause and look at the views, all
round! Then you will appreciate why we bought
this property! (Sorry, no croquet today). Park
on either side of the driveways avoiding the
bulbs just appearing on either side of the
downhill stretch, or face the wrath of Jenny!
Peter Coxhead is coming and will tell us what he
is doing about Heirloom seeds, and perhaps about
the Millennium seed bank activity initiated by
Kew gardens.
Jenny will show you her Mist Propagating
equipment, guaranteed to make a broom handle
sprout, I have just, today, attended a workshop
on fruit tree pruning at Franklin House, and
regret to say that my efforts this year, which
you will see, fly in the face of just about
everything that Brigitte Lyons, the
Horticultural Consultant had to say! I guess
little fruit this year for us! She left us with
some excellent notes. A copy will be available
and if you would like a copy there will be a
list and I will get copies made and sent out, or
kept for the next meeting.
A day like today, Thursday, is what we want, so
start praying!
Jenny will make tea and coffee and there will be
some small eats. If you like to bring anything,
by no means expected, make it small. We are not
the five thousand.
Look forward to seeing you on Saturday, Ian.
Update 2... A big thank you to Peter
coming along and giving us his talk. It changes
ones views of the commercial seed business
although I do not think Monsanto was anybody's
friend before, let alone now.
Seed Saving Group. Give it a thought and we
might discuss at our next get together.
Suzanne has hit a problem as the date suggested
for our next get together,
29 August, coincides with their calving
activities. Having been attacked by an irate
Highland cattle cow who had just dropped her
calf I have every desire to keep well away from
any activity of that nature! So. Anyone willing
to step in to host a get together next month,
either 22nd or 29th?
And/or, and this has been suggested, we postpone
the next one until September when the weather
should be better, (dryer?) and our gardens will
have more to offer. Let me know what you think
and I will attempt to make a rational decision.
Sincerely, Ian.

27th June 2009 |
Sue and John's
We met
yesterday, dodging the rain, at Sue and John's
at Bangor and admired their vast collection of
show chooks and the massive clearance job which
they have carried out on the property. When the
drizzle started again the cuppa was more than
usually welcome!
We enjoyed meeting two new couples who have
joined the group, Belinda and Allain Rule who
have just taken over the property which used to
belong to the car repairer at the junction of
the main road and the road leading up to Mt
Arthur Centre, (just cannot recollect its name!)
and Michelle and Shane Cresdee who have found a
property on Station Road, Lilydale, beyond the
railway crossing.
Next gathering will have managed to secure a visit
by Peter ? who is anxious to preserve pure plant
species and who will probably be seeking our
assistance in this endeavour. I consider this,
and similar endeavours which come to our
attention, is very much something we should look
at.
